– Letter to Tusta Krishna Swami, 9 January 1976
“I am especially proud how my householder disciples are preaching Lord Caitanya’s Mission. This is a new thing in the history of the Sankirtana Movement.”
Letter to Himavati – London 20 December, 1969
“Preaching means to see whatever little spark of bhakti is there in someone and fan it into blazing fire, which will burn all the anarthas and make him a great devotee.”
– Radhanath Swami
“The congregational development program should be one of the top programs of every temple and we should encourage the congregation devotees to advance spiritually and to take on responsibilities.”

SUPPORTING SATSANG PROGRAMS
Categories of Programs
- Satsang programs – These are programs organized at a periodic interval (weekly, fortnightly or atleast monthly) by devotees in a fixed locality for the local residents, typically in a public place, and will have a regular preacher and a management committee attached to it.
- House programs – These are programs organized at a periodic interval (weekly, fortnightly or atleast monthly) by a devotee in his / her home for the local residents for a smaller group (below 20 devotees) with a regular preacher connected.
Criteria for a registered Satsang program
- The principal preaching, activities and internal communications (through groups) associated with the program should be based on the teachings of ISKCON.
- At least one committed organiser/ preacher, taking responsibility of the program on a long term basis.
- Once the size of the program exceeds 20 devotees, a management committee must be formed as per the guidelines provided by CDD.
- Such Satsang Program must be conducted on regular basis (Weekly / Fortnightly / Monthly)
- At the earliest, there should ideally be atleast one trained / senior devotee couple who are attending and connected with the program for cultivating the devotees.
- For new programs, the preachers / organisers will be trained by the CDD on important topics like the Mood, Policies, Attitude & Dealings in Congregational preaching. For all existing preachers / organisers / cultivators, a training and certification process on the above topics will be initiated and run on an ongoing basis.
- It should ideally be conducted in a public place and in case being conducted in a home, the responsibility of organising should be by a team (not just the host).
- If donations are being collected for running the satsang program then proper accounting statements should be maintained by the management committee and circulated among the Local CDD.
Policies for House Programs
- The principal preaching, activities and internal communications (through groups) associated with the program should be based on the teachings of ISKCON.
- At least one committed organiser/ preacher, taking responsibility of the program on a long term basis.
- Programs in homes are a great way to start satsangas, as a program can be started with minimum investment and a small number of people like immediate neighbours. However, home programs have natural space and societal (like social strata issues, or timings set by housing societies, etc) limitations and should not be a permanent affair. Gradually they should be shifted to a public place as the number of devotees increase.
- In a home program, it is expected that the host (or team of organisers) would be conducting and sponsoring most of the activities related to running of a satsang. They should not directly or indirectly express to the congregation the need for their participation in services. It is best that the participants themselves volunteer for services when they are inspired.
- Prasadam could be cooked at home for the program by the host. However, if devotees choose to voluntarily sponsor the prasadam ingredients cost, then the quantity of raw materials procured and prasadam cooked should be proportionate to the numbers of devotees attending. Prasadam preparation can also be outsourced if required.
- The hosts should be careful not to engage (or even expect) the devotees who come for the program to assist in their household work even if these devotees offer their help.
- Winding up after the program: If any one voluntarily comes forward to help (for instance to wash their own plates, or removing the carpets / chairs / sound system, or cleaning the floor) they can be engaged but one should not force any one to do any type of service, nor should we make them feel guilty for not serving by our words or actions.
- The hosts should not ask for any money towards the program expenses (or any other cause) from the devotees attending the house program, but if they voluntarily wish to donate, these donations should be accepted specifically for a service like sponsoring the prasadam or any festival related Abhishek, etc, and should be announced at the end of the program, and be transparently accounted for. If donations start coming on a regular basis, there must be a management committee set up to oversee the program and the program should formally registered with the CDD.
- Also, if the number of participants in the program crosses 20, the program should be registered with the CDD.
Why register?
- The CDD is a formal body created by the Leadership of Sri Sri Radha Gopinath temple to serve and support the preaching activities in various satsangs across Mumbai Metropolitan region that are connected with our temple.
- To learn how to implement best practices in Devotee Cultivation, which are consistent with the mood and principles of Srila Prabhupada’s teachings as modelled by Sri Sri Radha Gopinath temple, in order to best serve the growing congregation by giving them a consistent and inspiring experience.
- To have clarity about the Policies and Guidelines created by the Temple for smooth conduct of Satsang programs.
- To connect with the larger community of devotees for the sustained and overall development of devotees in your Satsang program. This will also give access to Resources and Guidelines from the Temple and Local CDD, which can assist in growing, inspiring and nourishing your Satsang congregation.
- To provide opportunities for services for devotees beyond your Satsang program, giving them further fulfilling and meaningful devotional engagements.
- To provide information and access to the devotees in your Satsang program about the Community services provided by Sri Sri Radha Gopinath temple (For example, ISKCON authorized courses, Grihastashram related Training, Children related committees, Kartik Yatras, Emergency Support).
- To facilitate connection of devotees in your Satsang program to the Devotee care system of Sri Sri Radha Gopinath temple – the Mentor system / Counsellor system – which will enable lifelong spiritual care for the devotee, and are also a necessary condition for initiation within ISKCON.
- To help proactively identify and address / resolve issues affecting the functioning of existing congregations through the Resolve team of the CDD.
SUPPORT PROVIDED BY CDD
- Ideas / Help for expansion of programs
- Sharing of best practices from congregations across Mumbai
- Resources – Preachers, Courses content, List of Prasadam providers / kirtan groups, Devotees volunteering to serve, etc,
- Training – Topics / content for Seminars, Expansion ideas, Effective Fund utilisation, Training for Cultivators / Management committee, etc
- Issue Resolution – Support by specially trained devotees to Resolve satsang related issues.
Guidelines for Managing a Satsang program
- Maintain a Database of devotees
- Proactive planning / expansion of existing program
- Location of the program – preferably public place
- Transparency in money matters – policies for fund raising and use
- Management by group of devotees with equal standing / say
- Set up & wind up of program by a team
- Shared Responsibility matrix – prasadam roster over a period of time
- Provide facilities according to the needs of the audience
- Nurture of new devotees by a Cultivator.
- Budgeting / Planning for major outlays – festivals / BG Course
Guidelines for creation and running of a Management committee:
- Management committee by a group of devotees with equal standing / say – minimum 3, max 5
- The Management Committee should be formed as soon as there are more than 20 devotees attending the particular Satsang. The size could vary depending on the needs of the program. This committee should be composed of devotees who are committed to ISKCON, are chanting, and are of nearly equal standing with the preacher/organizer in spiritual or at least in social standing.
- The main purposes of the committee are to ensure the smooth running of the Satsang, enabling a consistent and inspiring experience for the congregation, ensuring adherence to spiritual standards & Vaishnava etiquette by all key stakeholders, setting systems for follow up, and planning for the growth of the congregation in numbers and their commitment to ISKCON.
- All members should have a mood of a servant rather than a controlling body. (How I can best serve others by connecting them to Krishna)
- Regular meetings should be conducted – at least once a month, and when needed for urgent interventions. Minutes should be maintained for all meetings to ensure that actions agreed to get executed.
- There should be good communication and relations amongst the members. Any decisions should be taken unanimously by the committee and not by one person. Any misunderstanding / disagreement amongst the committee members should be discussed and resolved immediately.
- As the congregation grows, sub-committees could be created for specific services like Program Finances, Prasadam Management, Festival organization, Yatras, Children’s committee, etc.
- All Financial transactions should be transparently accounted for, as per the Financial Guidelines document.
- Should take regular feedback from the devotees who are doing services in the Satsang, and make the necessary improvements.
- Should ensure that the database of devotees attending the Satsang is up to date, and keep sharing the same with Local CDD.
- For any resources it is not able to muster on its own, the Management Committee could contact the local CDD.
- Should maintain regular interaction with the local CDD members, sharing feedback and seeking any suggestions.
