The Importance of good character and values

“Education is meant to give much more than knowledge and practical skills. True education should also cultivate values, integrity, and character.”

Today, especially in higher education, there is tremendous emphasis on tools, technology, achievement, and expertise. These things certainly have value, but without good character they can easily become destructive rather than constructive.

My guru Srila Prabhupada would often tell us that skills, philosophy, learning, and knowledge have little real value unless they are built upon the foundation of good character.

Alongside science, culture, and practical abilities, we must also learn how to love, how to care, and how to serve others – not only when it is convenient.

The Importance of good character and values

Deep character is not determined by circumstances around us. It is born from our own inner conviction. It comes from the love of God that is within our heart.

When that love awakens within us, it naturally expresses itself through compassion, integrity, kindness, and respect in whatever we do and whatever we say.

If our service or compassion changes according to circumstances, then we will constantly change with the world around us. But dharma means something deeper. Dharma means living according to the eternal values found within the soul.

Circumstances may change, but our purpose should remain steady.

Our real purpose is expressed through our values, our integrity, our compassion for others, and our sincere desire to serve.
