Sri Rama’s Legacy Amidst Ravanness

The tragedy of human existence lies in the ease with which we get fooled by cheaters. However, when genuine people succumb to ego and display it through the power of Shastras, it becomes a painful, confusing and exhausting experience.

Ravan is dead and gone, yet Ravanness continues to exist to some degree or another. The historical personalities, symbolically persist.

In the opening of the Sri Rama temple, some degree of Ravanness is being manifested by some genuine people as well. That, indeed, is the saddest part.

Ravana came from one of the Sapta Rishis, a position of great honor, but he royally misused it. Particularly when he disguised himself as a sadhu and kidnapped Sitadevi, it was deception of the highest order.

The opening of the Sri Rama temple is not a one-party agenda; those who accuse it as such are belittling the entire legacy of Hindu resistance throughout the ages.

Some saintly people are boiling due to apparent deviation, but these same saints remained silent, and their blood did not boil when hundreds died for the cause. Instead, they were absorbed in philosophical debates about whether the creation is mithya or anitya.

In Sanatana Dharma, we forever respect their position but not their untimely outbursts in public space.

Every human being has limitations, and one of the limitations of a sadhu is his untimely anger. In the Bhagavatam, when devatas praised Narayana Rishi for not being angry with them, they mentioned, “people cross over big obstacles caused by temptation but drown in the water caused by the calf’s hoof print of anger.”

One of the historical realities is the avoidance of fighting the enemies of dharma in the name of “it’s God’s will.” However, when it comes to doing things a little differently from tradition, all hell breaks loose, and the traditionalists are ready to curse and bring inauspiciousness to their own people. These saintly people are holy and worshipable, but their public opinion can be painful.

When Bhima was extremely angry with Yudhsthira for gambling and wanted to burn the very hand of Yudhsthira, Arjuna warned him about the happiness of Duryodhana and his party upon Bhima’s outburst. In any condition adharmik forces have to be restrained.

The beauty of dharma tradition is healthy discussion amongst all. It does not matter what one’s position is.

Debate does not see age and wisdom does not allow one to swayed away by their position to debate.

Cultural reality does not see background; if they are senior, they deserve respect.

Sri Rama and Sri Krishna are epitomes of these qualities.

Harmony between independent debating and cultural submission is dharma tradition.

Let our leaders know this and contribute to the growth, so that the younger generation is not confused.

One of the greatest confusions for the younger generation is the outburst of people who are supposed to teach Shanti. The outburst happens either with fellow saintly persons or their followers.

In fact, in Ramayana, the sages requested Sri Rama to protect them from the attack of Rakshasas. They said they were capable to protect themselves, but pointed out that engaging in self-defense would involve curses fueled by anger, detrimental to their tapasya. Thus, they believed it was better for Sri Rama, being the official protector, to ensure the safety of the sages while maintaining stable emotions.

May the Ayodhya Ram Lalla bestow upon us the wisdom to chant and speak the qualities of Ramrajya and Sri Rama, ensuring our dharmik legacy continues to flourish substantively, rather than superficially.
